Sasquatch In Alberta: Republished this Fall

An old classic, which has been out of print since the early 1990s, will be republished this fall from Hancock House Publishers.

The book is the original as it was when first published in 1989/90 but more recent Alberta reports have been added since I did continue to research in Canada’s Wild Rose Province until the year 2002, when I made the move to the lower mainland of British Columbia.

Also, additional photos and witness’ diagrams which were not in the original publication have been added to this updated version of the book.

Hancock House Publishers will be taking advance orders on their website:   https://www.hancockhouse.com/collections/newly-released-forthcoming/products/sasquatch-in-alberta.

The book is due out at the end of September 2018.

Possible Sighting at Lake Errock

On April 24th, 2018 at approx 08:30 am, our witness in this case was driving to Chilliwack when he saw something in the tree-line moving; which walked out onto a house site.  At first he thought it was a large man doing yard work but after thinking the situation over and over again in his mind he realized he was looking at something different? The full interview with the witness follows. He, as well as the owners of the property, has asked for anonymity. So their names are being withheld from the written report.

Thomas Steenburg

B.C. File # 10209
LOCATION: Highway #7 (Lougheed Hwy) between Beaudry Rd, and Harrison Rd. British Columbia.
DATE: April 24, 2018.
TIME: 8:30 am.
REPORT BY: Thomas Steenburg

The witness in this case had made a post on the ‘West Coast Sasquatch’ web page.  Brad Trent replied to him asking him to contact myself.  Brad informed me of the post and I to asked him to contact me, which he Did.  On May 5th, 2018 myself with colleagues Brad Trent and Bill Reid, we met the man at the nearby Harrison Mills golf course restaurant and had a proper interview.  His original post to the website reads:

“I had a sighting on April 24 2018 at 8:00 am near Lake Errock.  I was driving East on Lougheed Highway between Beaudry road and Harrison Bay road. On the left-hand side I saw movement and saw the Sasquatch walking from the forest across someone’s side yard to get behind a fence attached to the side of the house.  The Sasquatch was huge, walking hunched and with bent knees and was dark brown from head to foot.  The weather was clear sky and bright sunshine.  I went back at 5:30 pm and took pictures of the area. I have family who live in this area so I drive this section of the Highway frequently.”

The interview I had with him now follows.

First of all would you state your full name please?
Answer with held from transcript.

Do wish to remain anonymous?
For now yes.

What is your present mailing address?
Answer with held from transcript.

The reason you were out in this area at the time of incident?
My Father bought a house out here a year and a half ago, and I come out here as often as I can.

What is your phone number?
Answer withheld from transcript.

What is your occupation?
I am an accountant, working for a finance department. In a office tower in downtown Vancouver.

Do you wear corrective lenses?
Yes.

Do you ware them at all times?
Yes. I just got brand new glasses, for driving.  Specific for focusing at distances.

How old are you?
I was born in 65, so I am 53.
Where did this incident occur?
On Lougheed highway, between Beaudry road, and Harrison bay road.

What date did this take place?
April 24. (2018)

Was it at night or day?
It was early in the morning.

What time?
8 am.

In your own words tell me what happened?
I left the house at 8 o’clock, (Fathers house), I was driving with the convertible top down, and I was driving up the road, (east bound), I noticed someone or something walking out of the trees. I could see the silo wet of the head, the shoulders, and part of the back, and as I was driving I kept staring at it. I passed the tree line, theirs a row of trees that is strait. Right at the edge of the property. Where it came out. I had the perfect view of the profile of it. It was hunched over. It was walking with bent knees. One of the legs was at a 45 degree angle. I kept driving.

You didn’t stop?
I didn’t stop.

It was actually in someones yard?
It had come out of the tree line, The little forest there, it actually isn’t a forest, it is actually someones property with trees that are 50 to 60 years old. As it step ed out of that area into the clear area, between the trees and a persons house. I don’t know who lives there?

Did you see where it was going?
It was heading toward the back yard.

It was heading toward the back yard?
Yes. It didn’t look at me, it kept looking forward.

Just describe the area where it was for me again?
That area there’s, a couple of houses at that first intersection at Beaudry road. Then there’s a bunch of trees that looks like it’s a vacant lot, Its virgin forest which backs on to more forest, then there’s a house right beside that. Then beyond that there’s a trailer and a Honda civic sitting there.

It’s a single house property right on the highway?
All by it’s self. Right beside a tract of forest.

Why were you in the area at the time?
My Neise was visiting her grandfather at Chilliwack. I was driving toward Agazzi heading for Chilliwack.

What distance would you estimate you were from the subject when you saw it?
Maybe 30 to 35 meters?

What color was it?
It was dark brown from head to toe. I didn’t see any skin tone. Just one color from head to toe.

What was your first impression?
I thought, ‘somebody doing yard work’? Then I saw it in profile and I thought, ‘Gee, that guy is wearing baggy closes.”  Then as I am going up the highway a bit I thought, ‘that wasn’t a person? What the hell did I just see?’  There was no clothes, there was no white hands, I couldn’t see white on the face? It was too big, and really didn’t walk like a human. Then I am thinking, ‘My god I just saw a Sasquatch!’  And the thing is, you don’t realize ’til, there is no reference card in your brain to identify a Sasquatch immediately.  So you just have to put the pieces together. Then you figure out what it was.

How did you react when you saw it?
Disbelief. I didn’t want it to be real. The rest of the way to pick up my niece, I’m thinking, Sasquatch, Sasquatch. Sasquatch, Sasquatch. No, I am not going to tell her, ’cause she is going to be staying at my father’s house, and I don’t want her to be scared.

What was it doing?
It was just walking.

It was walking the whole time?
Yes. It was moving as it came out of the tree line.

Was it hairy?
Yes. It was dark brown. It must have been hairy.

Did it stand and walk upright?
Yes it was upright.

Did you ever see it go down on all fours?
No I did not.

How tall would you estimate the subject to have been?
I think it was probably between 8 and 9 feet.

When it went by the house how tall was it compared to the side of the house?
Well I didn’t see it go behind the house. I saw it between the trees and that fence. It was at least as high as that fence. It was hunched over.

Which would be how tall?
The fence? I don’t know?

Taller than a man, shorter than a man?
Taller.

STEENBURG NOTE: Onsite investigation on the property revealed that it really was not a fence at all but a barrier behind the house which had been moved by the owners of the property after April 24.  It was about 6 feet tall which the witness thinks was a little shorter than the subject which was walking hunched over.

How much do you think it weighed?
I really don’t know. 300 pounds?

Heavier than a man?
I would say. Yes.

How long do you think you saw it for?
3 seconds?

Did it see you?
No. It must have heard me? I had the top down and the stereo blasting.

Oh you are one of those kind of drivers, eh?
LOL. (Nods head and shrugs shoulders)

Where you the only car on the highway at this point?
Yes. I was the only car on the highway. And then. So I am driving. I was wondering what it was? When you are driving through to Agazzi through this area, you go up this little mountain range, and there is this little pull out there? I tested were my location was? My GPS. It told me than it was 8:19 in the morning.

Did you notice any facial features?
No.

Could you tell if it was male or female?
From the profile, there was no breasts, so it must have been male?

Do you know that or are you guessing?
I couldn’t tell the sex of it.

Could you describe the arms?
This is the strangest part. I didn’t see the arms. It was kind of like, either I saw it when they were flush with the body. Or it was hiding it’s arms for some reason?

Did you smell anything before, during or after?
No. I didn’t smell anything.

Are there any other physical characteristics of the subject that stand out in your mind?
Yes. When I saw it from the back, it was if the Sasquatch was in a clock, the middle of it? I saw from 5 o’clock. The profile of the back the head was kind of. There was no neck. Just a rounded shape right onto the shoulders.

So you not only saw it in profile. You saw it from the back as well?
Yes.

So it was moving from the road towards the back of the house?
It was moving from the trees. It was moving from the tree-line, outside of the tree-line towards the back of the house.

In the time you saw it, you watched it walk from the tree-line.  I am going by the drawing you made?
That’s how I saw it – in profile. It was right on the edge of the trees when I saw its back.

I take it you did not go back to look for footprints?
No I didn’t. No.

Did you report what you saw?
I told my brother that day. When I got back from the airport (Chilliwack Airport), my brother was there. I told him I saw it. We went for a drive by the location and I said that’s where it happened, showed him the tree-line. Straight trees, forest on the one side, house on the other, it was the only place on that part of the road with those features. So we went back to our house (Father’s house).

How did he react when you told him?
I think he knows now that they are around. I think he tried to deny it. I tried to talk about it for awhile, then I stopped talking about it because I didn’t want to freak him out. Then I thought about it. So I went back and took those pictures. I took pictures of the location. And for the next 3 nights I stayed at our house, I was house sitting as my father had gone to Calgary. And I was so scared. I had the lights on and the TV on all night long. All the blinds closed. I couldn’t sleep. So when I got back to my house in West Vancouver, I decided to make a report on it. I found your web site (West Coast Sasquatch), I wanted to keep it a local report. So that’s the one I chose.

You didn’t report it to the RCMP or anything?
No.

Describe you general outdoor experience for me?
I used to be a Boy Scout. I have camped around here. And in Sasquatch Park, I am never going to go back there. My father has 5 acres, all wooded, I have set up trail cams. Two of them on the property. I have caught images of Bears, Bob cat, Coyote’s and squirrrels. I have those on my youtube page.

So if you see a bear, you know what you are looking at? You see an elk, you know what you are looking at?
I caught an image of a bear walking. My sister was walking in the dark, having a coffee in the morning and the bear was following her out back.

I take it there were no other witnesses?
I was alone.

What do you think it was?
Well there’s only 3 things it could be. I was hallucinating, There was someone in a costume, Or it was a Sasquatch.

Has any of your friends or family members ever made a report like this before?
No.

Have you ever made a report at any time to anyone else?
No, I haven’t.

Do you think it was a Sasquatch you saw? Or do you think you were mistaken?
I don’t think I was mistaken. The profile from the back, and the profile from the side, it couldn’t have been a bear, there was no snout. There were no ears.

OK.  Once again tell me what happened? I know it’s irritating and repetitive?
I am driving by and I see something moving in trees. That area is actually not thick forest, it is an open field but with some high trees. I see this. Thing from the back, I see the head and the shoulders, the side and the back. I think for a moment ‘someones doing yard work’, early in the morning. I’m looking at it as I drive by, I see the profile, it’s walking into the clearing toward the back of a house. Gee, that person has baggy clothes? One color from head to toe? Its huge? It’s knees are bent? So then I keep driving, and then I finally released that, putting all of this together in my mind that I just saw a Sasquatch? So I just kept driving and telling myself I saw a Sasquatch. I couldn’t concentrate or anything, I stopped for lunch and I kept thinking, ‘What am I going to do. What am I going to do’. Oh my god, now I know the things are real’. I am just terrified to house sit my fathers house’.

Are you still bothered by what you saw?
Yes. Extremely.

What bothers you the most about it?
The fact that um. The forest at my Dads. The forest is literary my Dad’s back yard. Those things could be coming down and walking around the house?

Are you frightened by that?
Yes. Extremely. I couldn’t sleep in my Dads house. I had to turn the lights on.

STEENBURG NOTE: Witness at this point goes into detail concerning to nightmares he has had after the sighting. I will not reproduce them here as they are, in my opinion, very personal.

Do you feel any better now by talking about it?
I told a friend of mine. At work. She told me that the best way to deal with this is to think about it positively? She said, “You saw one, now try to help prove they are real”. She said, “Don’t shoot them.”So I am going to try and take her advice.

This concluded my interview with the witness. I asked my colleagues at this point if they had any questions for the witness. We all sat and talked with him for awhile. It was apparent to us that he indeed was bothered by what he saw and I hope that we were able to put him at ease a little bit.
After we stopped at the property in question and introduced ourselves to the owner and a gentleman whom runs a firewood business out of the property. Both of whom will also remain anonymous in this report.
The gentleman who ran the firewood business seemed to be intrigued by the possibility of a Sasquatch on the property and told to go ahead and look around. The owner seemed a little more skeptical at the suggestion but not dismissive. A search revealed that the grass had been cut since April 24th, and the barrier our witness took to be a fence had been moved. The owner was deep into removing the black Barrie bushes back a fare distance , so a lot of the back area behind the house was being cleared. Neither man had seen anything odd or seen any footprints. Our search revealed only a few boot prints and nothing else.
In my opinion the witness in this case is not trying to pull off a hoax. I conclude that he either mistook a man or he did indeed see a Sasquatch.

Thomas Steenburg

Steenburg File #10206

This incident occurred on May 26, 2017 but did not come to my attention until late September.  I did go to the location with the witnesses a few days after doing a full interview.  He wished, for the time being, not to be named.  So, for that reason and to save space I will post his answer to one of my questions.

Could you just tell me what happened?

Yeah. Just like I wrote what happened, I got on my quad, I went up to the main Road, (Harrison West FSR) we were at Camp Cove. There was maybe 10 of us there.  I got on my quad, went up to the main road, hung a left, went over the small bridge there where the creek rises.  Immediately after that, there’s a little road that goes off to the left there.  There’s like these blocks there so you can’t drive down there but I could get around with my quad. This road parallels the main road for a bit, then goes down, crosses under the power lines, heads down for a bit, maybe another 300 yards or whatever, then there’s a tricky section.  I hit the gas a little too much on the bike and tipped it on it’s side.

Took me a bit to right it, collect my stuff and everything, then I continued on for a little bit, maybe 100 feet or so to the lake, and I sat there for a bit, checked the scenery turned around and I came back up, just about to the top where the main road is, then I remembered I forgot my sunglasses, it was sunny right, it was bright, I don’t have my sunglasses so I turned around and I went back down again (to the lake).  They were where I thought they’d be.  You know where I took my helmet off and stuff, they were right there.  I put them back on and again came back up to where this road parallels the main road again, and coming around this corner, and I can see off to the right, I think it’s a spruce tree, one of the big trees off the side of the road.  I could see this black thing kind of.  To me it looked like the ass of a bear, or whatever sticking out from behind this tree. That’s what I thought it was; I thought black bear right? I mean, I didn’t stop or whatever, because it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary, ’cause I’ve seen like a million bears and stuff, and as soon as it heard me, it took off.  Down the side hill there. I kept on coming and I stopped where I had seen it, just to see if I could see it and I could hear crashing down. It drops off pretty quick, and it goes down into a sort of gully.

I could hear the thing running, you know, like crash, bang, down the gully.  I couldn’t see it, ’cause like I said, it drops off.  From the time I stopped, to the time I saw my friend, who was coming up on the other side of the gully on the road that come and goes to Camp Cove, I heard Den coming up right (friend on other quad, on other road, which can be seen through the trees here).  I am yelling at him, but he couldn’t hear me,  he just oblivious. I could still hear the thing running through stuff down there, right, down the gully. I’m like, OK.  Whatever, probably just a bear or whatever, but as I looked right, holy shit, where it had to be standing, where I saw it, the tree, it’s like 4 feet down, it drops off pretty quick there, and I realized where it had to be standing was like 4 feet down below the road right?

STEENBURG NOTE: At this point the interview was interrupted by a knock at my door. After dealing with that we continued.

OK, so we were standing there, and looking around and stuff, like I said the base of the tree was about 4 feet below the base of the road.  If I hadn’t of seen that, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it, right.  Where it had to have been standing when I saw it, I just, I thought it was the ass end of a bear behind this tree, you know, about 4 feet tall, you know, just this kinda roundish, black thing, whatever.  But then, when I saw where it had to be standing, well, I then knew it had to be a lot bigger than I thought it was.  I could see where the ground was, it’s really hard-packed dirt, right.  It has been dry for a long time, I could see where the ground was scuffed; where it was standing.  OK, that thing was a lot bigger than I thought it was. Then I started thinking, OK, if it was a bear, if it was going up a tree, I would have seen the front arms around it right? I didn’t see anything like that!  I thought, hmm??

So I went back to camp, I kind of asked everybody, “Did you see anything strange”? No. No. Then I said, “Well, I saw something weird, right”.  Oh yeah, what?  Well, I think I saw something like, a Sasquatch, or something.  They just kinda laughed at that.  We spend a lot of time in the bush. This is what we do every weekend. I am a hunter.  We spend all the time that we can out in the bush right.

Photo taken by me from witness vantage point. Witness standing by tree where subject was seen.

This witness did impress me by his own logical thinking. Even though he now thinks it was a Sasquatch he saw, he does accept the possibility that he may be wrong.  Also, this man has spent a good part of his life in the bush, hunting, fishing , etc.  I have no doubt he has been in the woods more than myself.  At first, he also thought bear but after observing the fact that the base of this tree was 4 feet below the grade of this road, he feels that what he saw was about 8 feet tall, rather than the 4 to 5 feet he saw above the grade of the road.

Steenburg File # 10205

This incident was first brought to my attention from a friend of mine, Nina Reid, who knows the main witness of this case. The two witnesses have requested that their names remain confidential.

This incident occurred round 02:30 a.m. June 4th, 2017; 38 km up East Harrison Lake FSR.

My husband and I were camping by ourselves up there, which we do quite often. We sleep in the back of the pick up truck. So we don’t worry to much. We have a big dog and a tiny dog. We got there Saturday morning, we spent the day there, we were right beside the river. We were about 38 km up East Harrison. We turn to the left onto Pine. When you get to the bridge you drive down and camp right beside the river, there is a really nice spot there. There are river trails, and things which we know have been used, etc but we went to sleep that night. It was 02:36 in the morning, I remember looking at my clock. The dog had to come with me, I had to pee, and the dog had to come with me , because I won’t go outside alone. We had a bucket with a lid out side the truck. So I got out to go pee and I just got back in, the dog wanted to go chase something, and I said, “Oh no, no, no, get in the truck”, but he goes and I whistle him back, put him into the truck, shut the tail gate, we shut the top of the canopy as well, the window outside. All of a sudden we hear, it sounds like a miniature rock slide? My husband says, “there’s something outside” and I said, “Do you see anything”? He replies, “No”. So we kept on listening, then it sounded like a scratching down the side of the vehicle, its walking down the side of the truck, and on the hood. It came from the hood and down the side of the truck. And we seen the shadow pass, the canopy has glass on the sides, and it is tinted.  We could see the huge shadow walk passed outside the truck. Oh my goodness, that’s huge! And Jeremy say, “That’s not a bear.” No, that’s not a bear! And then we saw it go by the fire place. (Fire pit) The coals were just about burnt out by that point. There was no fire left, it was just a little bit of red embers. And we could see a little bit through the window, that’s all we could really see was that and the shadow that blocked the embers, we knew there was something outside, we heard a few more noise, but there was no way we were getting out of the truck. When we got up in the morning. We could see the tracks, or marks? Some were huge, the boulders, which were pushed down the little hill coming into our site. (the rock slide sounds?) and we saw the foot or hand print beside out fire pit. It was like someone huge leaned over and put their hand on the ground and was leaning over were our fire was? We did find some cougar tracks, but they were on the other side, that wasn’t what we heard and saw right. We had a cooler, but that wasn’t touched; we had a canopy set up (camp canopy). It was really tall.

The Camp site

Since this incident a large forest fire has closed East Harrison Lake FSR at the 20 km point. So I have not been able to get up there to look around. The question still remains. What or who came into the campsite that Morning?

A Special Lady

A very dear lady to me lost her battle with cancer on May 30th, 2017.

I first met Vera after herself and another dear friend of mine, Christina, came to my home to tell me of a strange creature Vera had encountered just outside her home on the afternoon of September 21st,  2011.  She had come outside to see why her next door neighbors’ dogs were barking so much when she caught sight of something strange just behind the tree line which separates her home with the railway tracks.  The details of this encounter I have already published (Steenburg File# 10173).

After the two had stared at each other for about 30 seconds, which seemed much longer to Vera, the subject simply walked away from her down the rail line towards, what was locally known as, Crazy Creek.  She never saw it again.  She then contacted Christina and told her about what she saw, and it was Christina whom told her to talk to me; which we did the following evening.

At first Vera didn’t want any word of her account getting out and, in fact, when I went to investigate at the sight, she told the locals that I was there to look into a Mountain Lion she had seen.   At the time she was a foster mom and was afraid that if word got out that she had seen a possible Sasquatch that might be used against her.

But over the years as we got to know each other she relaxed a bit over the whole affair and took part when I asked in radio and television documentaries on the the subject and had even come along with me on few day expositions.  One such Radio show was titled ”Footsteps’ and aired in 2015.   Some of the TV programs were: ‘BC is Awesome’ which aired in 2016; ‘Finding Bigfoot’ when they filmed up on the Chehalis Reserve in 2015; and ‘Red Earth Uncovered’ which was filmed in the fall of 2016 and is due to air in 2018.  It is a program of First Nation perspective, and Vera being of First Nation birth herself, I felt was a natural choice for their Sasquatch episode.

Vera tells of her encounter at my home Sept 22, 2011

I will miss her.

BC Hunting Show

I was  asked by the organizers of this year’s BC Hunting Show at the Trade Ex Complex in Abbotsford to give a public talk on the history and continued investigation into the on-going Sasquatch mystery in British Columbia.   I was asked to give one talk each day of the show which ran from March 2 through to the 5th, 2017.

Poster for the Sasquatch display booth during the show.

It was a good show all around with displays and outdoor gear that any Sasquatch researcher or any active outdoor sportsman would appreciate.  Especially if he or she is a resent lottery winner! Good lord, the prices of most of this stuff!!

I still had to do my night job so this was 4 days straight with little or no sleep but with the help of colleagues it went well, I think.   Many of the public engaged in asking questions and telling stories about themselves or friends and relatives in the past  who had reported encounters with the Sasquatch.  Even the grandson of Albert Ostman stopped by to talk.

Display booth just before doors were opened the first day.

Sasquatch Park Encounter???

During the morning of January 28, 2017, I stopped by Rocko’s, a cafe in Mission BC, to meet and talk with a group of researchers who were heading out to Harrison Lake to do some looking around with a couple of visiting researchers from the USA.

John Kirk, president of the BCSCC, his wife Winona, a First Nation woman from Alberta, who has a good deal of tracking knowledge under her belt, Kennith Joholske , a visiting researcher from the state of Maryland, US and researcher David Winter from Washington State, US.

The group was planning to head up the Harrison Lake east shore Forest service road, waiting by the entrance gates of Sasquatch Provincial Park for researcher, Jason Zakrission, to catch up with them before proceeding.  But for now over Rocko’s bad coffee and breakfast  we spent a couple of hours comparing notes and theory concerning my favoured subject, the Sasquatch.  I did think about joining the group but they already seemed to have a full car load. I wish I had.

Later the following  night, I was contacted by John Kirk via email concerning something strange the group had encountered while waiting for Jason Zakrission at the Park gates:

Thomas,

Yesterday, at four p.m. the four of us were waiting for Jason at the locked gates of Sasquatch Provincial park. Winona and Kenny both commented on how they felt something was watching us.

I scanned the woods to the south and saw a pretty big figure standing between two trees about 100 or so feet away. it was swaying from side to side and had no neck with the head being set on the shoulders. As I got everyone’s attention to get them to look at it, Winona saw it move from left to right.

I got a pretty good look at this thing from the thighs up and it was very broad. I did not know but Winona was saving at it, but in response to this, the creature raised it’s arm to chest height. It did not save, just raised it’s left arm.

It continue to rock from side to side as all four of us looked at it. After a while it stepped back and was gone. Two minutes later Jason arrived and was stunned by what we told him we had seen. Because he had good boots, he was able to climb up to just below the are where the figure had stood, but could go no further.

We kept observing the hillside for a further period and then made whooping sounds. In response we got two high pitched whoops back from just to the right and to the west of where the thing has been standing.

A few minutes later Jason made a loud roaring sound and there was a reply to the northeast of us. It was very different from the first two vocalizations and was very loud even though distant. We made more vocalizations, but there were no further responses.

With the onset of darkness we decided to go up the east side of Harrison Lake. After a few hours using a Flir we saw nothing further and Jason suggested returning to where we earlier by the gates.

We brought a bunch of thermal images and after a few minutes we got a hit where we had seen the figure earlier. It was very hot and we knew it was a living organism and appeared to have a pointed head. One of our people moved toward the slope and the hot spot stood up and ran up hill from right to left and we could see it was a Sasquatch. It was tall, but height estimates are impossible. It had two legs and it’s arms swung pretty far. It moved very fast, but you could see it bobbing up and down as it tanto the left and then uphill to the right. It went behind tree and was lost.

Not long after we got a hit of something moving low to the ground. Again we could see the pointed head and have video of this segment. The earlier running segment was not captured as Graz’s camera experienced battery failure. Very disappointing.

We also saw another strong heat signal and recorded it, but we believe this to have been a big rodent.

Nothing further was seen and we left the gates about 9.30 p.m.

We hope to return there next Saturday. I am getting some decent hiking boots so that I can climb up the hill to look at the are where it stood and height comparisons. If you want to join us that would be great. If not Winona would like to pop by you r place afterwards to visit and talk. Let me know if you’ll be available and interested.

I did interview John, Winona, and Kennith the following evening.  David Winter had left for home in Washington and I would contact him a few days later.  I did also talk with Jason Zakrisson, the 5th member of the group who was to meet with them at the park gates.  And I have to say there were a few discrepancies in some the the accounts of what happened, and what was seen, and what was seen by whom and when? However nothing serious enough to make me believe that any of these witnesses, some of which have been colleagues and friends for years, were trying to pull off some sort of hoax of any kind. Far from it.

As you have read in John Kirk’s e-mail, at approx 4 pm two of the group, Kennith and Winona had expressed to John that they felt like they were being watched. Not uncommon. In fact, I think it is safe to say that anytime in the British Columbia wilderness you are always being watched by something. John then started scanning the hillside beside the road to the south east. It was then he spotted a figure which seemed about 150 to 200 hundred feet away, standing still, shifting a bit from side to side. John points this out to the others, both Winona and Kennith state they saw the figure, too. David Winter, who was getting a camera and a Flir device from his vehicle, was the last to look but, according to what I was told, did not see it.

Jason arrived at this time and was taken aback a bit by this excited group pointing up the hill and saying they may just have seen a Sasquatch? Now, according to the group, Jason just missed this encounter by a couple of minutes, arriving just as they lost site of the figure.  But Jason told me he did indeed see a figure up there, that looked to him like the head and shoulders of something or someone?  No fine detail visible to his eye but a figure of some kind moving up there.  After a few minutes, Jason went up the hillside a bit to look around while the others watched from below, keeping there eyes pealed. But, according to what they told me, they did not see it again at this time.

Then, for reasons which really puzzle me, the group decided to leave the area and proceed with their original plan to proceed up the lake for a bit to look around.  Perhaps this was done for the visiting American researchers who had never been here before?  But I have to say, if I had been with them I would have waved and said,” pick me up on the way back because there is no way in hell I am going to leave this area now!!”

After some time up the lake, Jason suggested they return to the Park gates location in order to use the Flir device, as it was now dark.  Once back, they employed the Flir device and did indeed pick up movement on the hillside.  David Winter did try to use the Flir with his video camera but battery problems caused the video camera to die after only a few minutes.  Though during this time, I was told he did pick up an image of something moving up the hill.  David did send me a copy of the footage and there is indeed something moving through the tress but in my opinion, it could really be anything.

Here below is what David wrote when he sent me the footage:

Sorry I missed the call, Tom.  We’ll have to do this by email for now, as I don’t have international calling on my phone plan.  Give me a list of questions, and I’ll go from there.  For now, I’ll attach a copy of the “squatch” I caught on thermal.  It’s at a distance, after it ran away up the hill, when my recording camera died.  The battery was replaced as quick as possible, but we didn’t see this tiny catch until I got home and went over the video with John, Winona and Kenny on Skype.  It’s not much, but we believe it to be what made the tracks Winona found.  Get back to me.

Graz aka David Winter.

I have since been told that there was a second Flir image taken that night which at the time of writing this article, I have still not seen.

The footage I have seen is open to interpretation, in my opinion.  It could be anything; in fact, I think it is much closer to the road than whatever or whoever was seen earlier at 4 pm.

I went out with three of the witnesses to the location four days later, February 1st 2017, a Wednesday.  We did some extensive searching of the area. John and I viewing from the witness vantage point with Winona standing where the subject was.  She had to wave her arms in the air before I spotted her at all.  I was amazed that any of the group saw anything. But I did notice at 4pm that at this time of year, the sunlight makes the right side of the tress illuminate to the eye while the left side of those same trees cast a dark shadow.
If the subject was caught in this light while moving from side to side, in my opinion, it would stand out to any person watching from the roadside below.

After we made these vantage point comparisons, myself and John Kirk went uphill to join Winona and Kennith on the spot the subject had been.  Winona now put her hunting and tracking skills to work, and not far from the spot were the subject had been, she noticed the trail where something had walked away from the spot in question.

We watched as she tracked the the subject and pointed out what she thought were tracks. She was right, as far as i could tell, but they were nothing distinct, as far as i could see.  I then asked her to explain her history and knowledge of tracking for the camera, which she did.  After I asked to point out which direction she thought the subject was heading, she pointed downhill and it was there I came across the first cast-able print.

Best of the line, March 1st, 2017 T.Steenburg

In my opinion, there was now evidence that at least something or someone was up on the hillside.  However, did it mean that these possible prints were created on the day and time in question? No. Then again, it is possible that they were.  The print in the above photo as well as the one before it were cast.  The step between the two was 6 feet 7 inches; the length of the track was 15 inches.  Not the best conditions to cast footprints but we decided to do so any way.

After casting
J.Kirk and T.Steenburg measure step length. 6 feet, 7 inches

A few days after this onsite investigation, the worst snow fall of the winter occurred and a return trip later with other researchers found that the tracks did not survive the snowfall.

After having interviewed the witnesses and done follow up investigation at the site, I have come to the following conclusions:

1. This was not a hoax, therefore the witnesses are NOT lying.

2. There were discrepancies in some of the witness testimony when compared with each other.  However, this is more due to each individual circumstances at the moment rather than any attempt at deception.

3.  What was encountered at 4 pm is the crunch of this case rather than what happened later, at 9 pm (this could change after I see the second piece of footage).

It has been suggested that perhaps a bear standing up was seen?  Based on the description, I can see how this can be possible, but we found no bear tracks afterwards.

In my opinion, the five witnesses either encountered a Sasquatch on January 28th, 2017 or they saw a man up on  the hillside.   It was definitely one or the other.

UPDATE: March 15th, 2017.

The following was posted by researcher David Winter on his face book page, after he had read this post concerning the incident of Jan 28th, 2017

David Winter Now that I’ve read the account on Tom’s website, I’ll have to remind the rest of the fellow experiencers of this situation, about something left out of the account on Tom’s website. Here is what is stated, then I’ll do a recount. “Yesterday, at four p.m. the four of us were waiting for Jason at the locked gates of Sasquatch Provincial park. Winona and Kenny both commented on how they felt something was watching us.

I scanned the woods to the south and saw a pretty big figure standing between two trees about 100 or so feet away. it was swaying from side to side and had no neck with the head being set on the shoulders. As I got everyone’s attention to get them to look at it, Winona saw it move from left to right.” Now, there is something left out. We were milling around next to the gate, waiting for Jason. We heard a couple of growls, and got perked. I went to my Jeep and got out my “blobsquatch eliminator” infrared camera, and started playing with it. As I scanned from the gate, to my right, I saw a black blob between the trees. I yelled “BLACK BLOB” and got everyone’s attention, as I attemped to focus my infrared camera on it. Because of the very low light, and less sun for the infrared, I just couldn’t focus on the blob in the distance. The trees between me and the blob, caused even more problems as the camera wouldn’t let them go in the auto focus mode. I fought with that, going into manual mode, and the blob still wouldn’t focus. As I’m concentrating on this battle, John, Winona and Kenny are watching the blob as stated above. This is my account.

It appears that David actually did see the subject during the 4 pm encounter.

2012/02/00 – Mission, Hatzic Lake area.  Very Tall, Shaggy, Dark Brown Hair:

A lady with two friends on a equestrian farm in the Hatzic Lake area sighted what they believe was a Sasquatch at about 7:00 am. in mid-February 2012.  The lady informed Gene Baade of the group’s experience and he sent the information to Thomas Steenburg.  Here is what was provided (edited for clarity):

It was just getting light out and you could tell it was going to be a beautiful day.  He [the Sasquatch] was about 100 feet, maybe 150 feet from us.  He came out of the forest right along the tree line and began taking huge steps along the tree line heading west.  We all watched him make his away across the field; he made about 200 feet in 30 seconds—he was extremely quick [See Note 1].  He was about 11 feet tall and had shag dark
brownish hair all over him; almost like he was wearing a huge shag jacket. His arms were what really got me—they were so long. He looked like big hairy ape. He was behaving like he was in a hurry and didn’t want to be seen. As he popped out of the tree line he scanned the area and then headed west in a hurry; not running though—just a quick walk. The horses didn’t seem to notice or care, which I thought was weird; maybe if they [sasquatch] had been visiting the horses they were already used to it [See Note 2]. There were three of us who saw the same thing; there was no explaining it or denying it.

Note 1: The speed equals 6.67 feet per second. An average person walks at 4.6 feet per second, so the speed, while quick, was not extremely so (the time was likely much less or the distance much greater).

Note 2: The information about the horses not caring was indeed odd; however, Almasty allegedly have an affinity for horses, which don’t mind their presence at all.

2011/07/03 – Near Chetwynd. Something Seen Along the
Railway Tracks: A railway line inspector for the Canadian National
Railway reported that he saw two unusual man-like creatures cross
the railway tracks at a distance of about 800 feet. He described them
as being hair covered (dark brown in color), massive upper body and
very long arms. He estimated the height of one individual at about 7
feet and the other about 6.5 feet. They were walking side-by-side
with the taller one a little ahead of the other. They crossed the tracks,
proceeded along a rocky creek bank and entered an area with willow
trees where they disappeared from sight. The inspector heard a high pitched
laugh-like sound from the willows. He went to the area
where the tracks had been crossed but did not find any footprints
there or in the long grass leading up to the rail line. Nevertheless, the
path they had taken could be seen in the grass. He also looked along
the creek bank; no prints were seen, but he sensed a slight unpleasant
odor.
The inspector was part of a crew of men, but the others had left
before the sighting. He later told his wife of the incident and she
informed Thomas Steenburg who followed up with the inspector.

2009/SU/00 – Harrison Lake Area. Monkey Just Over Four Feet
Tall: A resident who worked as a gate security man at Harrison Lake
had a strange sighting at about 4:00 p.m. in the summer of 2009. On
his way to work, he saw what he described as a monkey about 4 feet
tall cross the road in front of his car. He exclaimed to himself, “A
monkey! Some fool has let loose a damn monkey!” Some time later,
he became acquainted with Bill Miller, a local Sasquatch researcher,
and the resident mentioned his odd experience. He had not considered
a Sasquatch connection and was not convinced that the “monkey”
he saw was a young Sasquatch. He insists that what he saw was
a monkey or some sort or a chimpanzee. He was adamant that it was
not a small person, bear, or any other any other animal known to be
in the Harrison area.
