A Slow September? Not Really.

A few folks have commented how slow this last month has been, report wise. Yes, they have been few and far between but I have looked into a few which I normally would not write about since certain aspects of the report do not meet a standard which I consider a must. This first incident sounded very interesting but unfortunately the main witness has decided she does not wish to be interviewed or become involved in any further investigation in any way. Needless to say, as far as I was concerned that was the end of it. However, a fellow she did talk to manged to note a few facts.

This alleged sighting occurred August 9th 2019. It was in the wooded hills northwest of Kamloops, BC. It was about 4:45 pm. Witness was in pickup truck with 4 other people. She saw the subject for 3 to 5 seconds. She did try to alert the others to it but by the time the truck was halted, whatever it was, was out of view? She did not mention the name Sasquatch to the other people, but said some animal was on the hillside. She thought it was tall, about 7 feet, huge shoulders with no neck and had a somewhat conical shape to the head. It had a uniform dark color to its entire body which she said was either hair or a full body suit of some kind. I would have liked to follow up on this case when it was happening, but the witness has decided to stop talking about it.

A second incident came to my attention from a friend named Brad Trent who was recently on a hunting trip and was talking to another hunter around the fire when the subject of Sasquatch came up in conversation. This fellow told Brad he saw what he be leaves to be a Sasquatch during October of 2007, while he and another man were driving north up the Harrison Lake East F.S.R. They were at the 4 km point very close to the Slollicum F.S.R. turn off, when both men saw what for a moment they took for a bear come out of the trees on the west side, crossed the road about 100 yards in front of their pick up truck, and scramble up into the wooded hill side to the east. The whole thing lasted about 5 seconds. The man telling this story did give his first name but I will keep that confidential for now. The second man in the truck was not identified. He did describe what he saw as bigger than a bear. it was a dark colour; hairy and was upright the whole time it was in view. Sighting lasted about 5 to 6 seconds? That was about all he told Brad. Now I would like to talk to this man to try and get more details so hopefully that will happen in the near future?

This is just a couple of examples of reported incidents I hear all the time which for one reason or another do not result in full detailed interviews. More often than not, due to witness reluctance, I don’t blame them but that just makes me even more interested in hearing more. That has been September so far. Slow but by no means less interesting.

Red eye reflection?

For forty years of research now, I have always had a red-flag pop up in my mind anytime someone reported that the subject they were looking at in the dark had a bright red color reflection in the eyes when a flashlight or car head lights were directed towards its face. I have encountered animal eye reflection myself hundreds of times during all those years searching for signs of Sasquatch. As well as many years before that growing up in wilderness areas in Ontario, Canada. Almost always, the eye reflection was white. Sometimes a little pinkish or orangey tinge to it,but basically white. So, when a witness described bright red eye reflection, I was assuming they were mistaken, seeing either pink or orange color or they were just trying to make the encounter sound more creepy and exciting than it actually was. Well, it is never too late to admit that I was wrong. I, THOMAS STEENBURG, WAS WRONG! I now know it is indeed possible that for some reason, eye reflection, in wildlife can appear to be bright red to the observer.

I came to this conclusion during the early morning hours of August 20th, 2019 at approximately 3 am as I was driving towards the entrance to Sasquatch Provincial Park . I noticed two bright red dots in the long grass off the right hand side (passenger side) which I took at first to be reflectors on a old fence or sign post? Bright red. I never got close enough to see what this thing was as they appeared to me to turn away in the direction of the thick forest on that side of the road. They did not appear to be any higher off the road surface than a raccoon or bob cat would be. So, the idea of a Sasquatch did not enter my mind. I should also mention that the location of this was right between two prior investigations of sightings in 1972 and 2010. I did stop and tried to see what this might be by flashlight but nothing else was seen. There is a rather deep ditch there at this point as well, meaning that it could indeed have been something bigger than a raccoon or bob cat? However, the fact remains I never got close enough to see the outline of anything as the eyes just seemed to look at my approaching headlights for a moment, then turned away and retreated into the forest. I did return during daylight hours on August 22nd, and found no sign of a old post or sign with reflectors, nor any other sign like footprints? I have no idea what it was behind what I now believe was a pair of bright red reflective eyes? I did take some video footage of the location during day light. I hope you enjoy.

Showing Sasquatch History

On Sunday, June 9th, 2019 I met a visiting researcher from the State of Oregon, Dustin Severs whom has a keen interest in the Classic tales from the past. As well as some of the pioneers from the early days of Sasquatch investigation: the late John Green, as well as the late Rene Dahinden, and the late Bob Titmus; all three of which I knew well and spent many hours with in the field. Dustin has a future book in mind and I had many stories to tell. We started the day visiting the former homes of Green and Titmus in Harrison Hot Springs, then took a ride out to Harrison Mills to hopefully view the John Green exhibit at the Kilby Museum. Unfortunately, our timing was bad and the museum was still closed. Dustin decided he would try again the next day on his way back home.

We then head down Highway 7 to Ruby Creek and the site of the Classic Ruby Creek Incident of 1941. I am fortunate enough to be on good relations with the present day owners and have permission to show interested parties the location on which the old house once stood.

I had my complete file along for him to review and photograph. I even showed him the old shovel George Chapman left in the tree all those decades ago.

After spending some time at the Chapman site, we then went up to Yale BC where I took Dustin to the location of tunnel number #4 which is the location of the alleged Jacko capture back during the gold rush days of 1884, another Sasquatch Classic. I have only shown the spot to about 18 people since I first visited it many years ago. I still wonder if it was a true story or an early example of 19th century tabloid journalism? Whichever, it is a Classic in the history of research. Dustin seemed to be captivated.

We stopped at a few more sites and every time we went by a spot where I report or sighting was brought to my attention, we would talk about it. We had lunch back in Harrison where I let Dustin review a large binder of past correspondence between myself and the late John Green, Rene Dahinden ,Bob Titmus, and others. I only hope that Dustin found the day worth his time.
